Clearing the Pipes: Circulation, Decisions, and the Intelligence of Movement
Before we talk about strength.
Before flexibility.
Before discipline, courage, or change.
We start with flow.
Not blood flow in the narrow, gym-science sense.
Something subtler.
Something older.
An electromagnetic intelligence that runs through your body like an invisible accelerator—making movement easier, decisions clearer, and life less effortful.
If that flow is blocked, everything feels heavy.
If it’s open, almost anything becomes possible.
This chapter is about learning how to take the kinks out of the hosepipe.
The House-Pipe Principle
Imagine your body as a house full of pipes.
Over years—decades—those pipes get bent.
Compressed.
Twisted by posture, stress, injury, habit, fear, responsibility.
Energy still moves… but poorly.
Before you “do” yoga, exercise, creativity, or even sleep well, you want to unkink the system.
That’s why we always begin with mobilisation.
Not perfection.
Not precision.
Movement.
Mobilisation is medicine.
You are not trying to achieve a shape.
You are reminding joints, fascia, nerves, and channels how to communicate again.
If you are moving gently, breathing, and not forcing pain—you are doing it right.
Authority: 80% Me, 20% You
Let’s be clear.
I will guide you with experience, integrity, and good intention.
But you remain in charge of your body.
Eighty percent of the authority is with me.
Twenty percent stays with you.
Always.
Pain is information.
Discomfort can be useful—but pain is a message.
Blind obedience is not wisdom.
History proved that very clearly in 1946.
You are not here to “follow orders.”
You are here to develop embodied intelligence.
Mobilisation: Taking Out the Kinks
We begin simply.
Knees gently side to side.
Feet rooted.
Spine rising.
Nothing dramatic.
Nothing heroic.
Just movement through joints—knees, hips, shoulders, neck—like massaging the body from the inside.
Rolling the wrists.
Circling the shoulders.
Letting the head move slowly, carefully.
This is not choreography.
It’s maintenance.
When joints move, circulation improves.
When circulation improves, energy returns.
When energy returns, decisions get easier.
That’s not philosophy.
That’s physiology meeting Taoism.
Breath: Turning On the Tap
Mobilisation removes the kinks.
Breathing turns on the tap.
Deep breathing combined with gentle pressure is one of the fastest ways to push circulation into places it normally struggles to reach—organs, bones, glands, connective tissue.
Here’s the key principle:
When you gently hold the breath while contracting muscles, blood is forced away from its usual highways and into the side roads—the capillaries that feed deep tissue.
Aging is, in many ways, a slow starvation of circulation.
Restore circulation and you slow aging.
It really is that simple.
The Gallbladder and the Courage to Decide
In Chinese medicine, the gallbladder meridian runs through the shoulders and sides of the body.
Its function?
Decision-making.
Clear decisions.
Decisive action.
The ability to move forward without constant self-doubt.
That’s why side stretches matter.
That’s why shoulder movement matters.
You are not “stretching.”
You are teaching your nervous system how to commit.
Weak decisions often come from a body that hasn’t been supported to decide.
You Can’t Really Get This Wrong
People worry too much about doing things “correctly.”
Relax.
If you are moving, breathing, and not forcing pain—you are doing something good for your body.
Different teachers will cue things differently.
That doesn’t mean one is right and one is wrong.
Movement plus breath equals benefit.
Stress plus perfectionism equals tension.
You can get stressed for free.
You don’t need to pay me for that.
Pressure, Purification, and Youth
Here’s another uncomfortable truth:
Modern life leaves residue.
Poor sleep.
Stress eating.
Alcohol.
Suppressed emotion.
Years of “making do.”
That residue accumulates in the organs and tissues.
Deep breathing combined with muscular contraction forces circulation into places that need cleaning—liver, intestines, kidneys, endocrine glands.
Think of it like Hercules cleaning the stables.
You don’t scrub the mess.
You redirect a river.
The Five Elements: Emotional Hygiene
Each major organ system carries emotional intelligence:
Wood (Liver/Gallbladder): Vision, kindness, forgiveness
Fire (Heart): Joy, connection, purpose
Earth (Stomach/Spleen): Stability, generosity, nourishment
Metal (Lungs): Courage, clarity, the ability to let go
Water (Kidneys): Wisdom, confidence, deep power
Movement is how you speak to these systems.
Breathing is how you listen back.
When you stretch the sides, you soften frustration.
When you open the chest, you remind the heart what it wants.
When you fold forward, you restore humility and strength.
This is not metaphor.
It’s somatic psychology thousands of years old.
Identity, Letting Go, and the Metal Element
At a certain point in life, strength isn’t about adding more.
It’s about letting go.
The lungs and large intestine—the Metal element—govern identity and release.
Sometimes we don’t pursue our heart’s desires because we think:
“I’m too old.”
“I’m not that kind of person.”
“I don’t deserve that.”
Those beliefs live in the body.
Circulation clears space for a new identity to take hold.
Strengthening the Spine: Psychological Backbone
A strong spine changes how you meet life.
A strong neck makes you harder to knock off course—physically and psychologically.
In martial arts, we trained the neck for survival.
In life, a strong spine gives you backbone.
You feel supported.
You feel capable.
You feel able to face what you’ve been avoiding.
Freedom, as the Brazilians say, is not given.
It is taken back.
Intention Makes Movement Powerful
Here’s the final principle.
Movement alone is good.
Movement combined with clear intention is transformative.
When you move with the intention of supporting your heart’s desires, your nervous system listens differently.
Action changes the nature of intention.
Your body believes what you do, not what you wish.
Rest, Absorption, Integration
We always end by lying down.
Stillness allows the body to integrate.
The nervous system recalibrates.
Circulation settles into new pathways.
This is not collapse.
It is digestion.
You’ve cleared the pipes.
Turned on the tap.
Reminded your body how to flow.
Now you rest.
And from that rest, clarity emerges.
Closing Thought
You don’t need to overhaul your life today.
You need to move.
Breathe.
Clear space.
Strong decisions grow naturally from a body that flows.
And a body that flows is far harder to stop.
