Why is Vitamin B12 important?

- B12 plays an important role in the nervous system (mental functioning) and in carbohydrate metabolism (energy)

- B12 deficiency is linked to fatigue, inability to concentrate, changes in memory, and depression

- B12 has been shown to improve inflammatory symptoms, such as bursitis and sciatica, and to decrease homocysteine levels, a bio-maker for heart disease

- B12 has been shown to decrease symptoms of fatigue, such as chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia

Why would I be deficient in B12?

- As we age, our body’s ability to digest foods high in B12 (beef, eggs, chicken) diminishes

- Digestion of foods high in B12 are inhibited by certain medications, such as H2 blockers, reflux medications, and Glucophages for blood sugar control

- As we age, our body’s ability to absorb B12 decreases

How often should I have a B12 injection?
In general, B12 injections are recommended once a month. Once a week for the first few weeks may be suggested.
